Wa Ale Island Resort – Myeik Archipelago, Myanmar

You know you’re heading somewhere very special when the last part of your journey is a three-hour trip by luxury yacht. But that’s the thing about Wa Ale Island in the Andaman Sea, dangling off the southern tip of Myanmar. Its rangy, undisturbed remoteness means it’s a place where the rocks and rainforest can support the wildlife.

Wa Ale Island Resort – Myeik Archipelago, Myanmar

The scenic, jagged coastline encircles two wonderful beaches. The Honeymoon Beach is about a kilometre’s walk from the small, laid-back tented resort, following lush rainforest tracks, where the dazzling white sand and calm waters are as dreamy as they sound. The other one, Turtle Beach, is not quite so carefree, but just as lovely. Here native turtles lay their eggs all year round, and the Lampi Foundation conservation charity makes sure you can observe the lifecycles of these beautiful creatures without interfering. Then again, you might come face to face with one in the warm waters nearby, when you sample the excellent snorkeling and diving on offer, not to mention the kayaking through the labyrinth of the inland mangroves.
