The four-course menu – soup, fish, meat, dessert in the grand French manner – is rich with bisques and sauces as the maître h’hotel makes his continual circuit. You’ll try such fare as coq en pate, baba bouchon, boudin blanc mushroom vol-au-vents, spiced foie-gras – all of it mouth-watering even if, perhaps, not quite vegan-friendly. To enjoy this, you need to relish the rare opportunity to be the very grandest of gourmand.

If you’re combining time in Paris with a tour of its many historic attractions your banquet room at the Shangri-La is a great place to start.
