Shangri-La Hotel, Paris
Plan a ‘Bonaparte dinner’ at the Shangri-La, a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower, for your favourite friends and you’ll be transporting them straight back to the magnificence of 19th century entertaining. You’ll feel like, and probably taste, the upper crust!
Shangri-La Hotel, Paris
Want to see Paris? You have a stunning, full-on view of its most spectacular totem from the Shangri-La Hotel, as the Eiffel Tower is right in front of the terraces and windows.
When you and your friends indulge in one of the Hotel’s utterly sumptuous Bonaparte dinners, though, the feast for the eyes is actually in the room – the former apartment of Prince Roland Bonaparte himself – because the floral display along the centre of a nine-metre long table radiates the heady scent of 19th century opulence.
The dinner is everything you’d expect from a double-Michelin-starred chef like Christophe Moret and then, with its carefully-researched history, something else again.
The four-course menu – soup, fish, meat, dessert in the grand French manner – is rich with bisques and sauces as the maître h’hotel makes his continual circuit. You’ll try such fare as coq en pate, baba bouchon, boudin blanc mushroom vol-au-vents, spiced foie-gras – all of it mouth-watering even if, perhaps, not quite vegan-friendly. To enjoy this, you need to relish the rare opportunity to be the very grandest of gourmand.
If you’re combining time in Paris with a tour of its many historic attractions your banquet room at the Shangri-La is a great place to start. Once you’ve been announced and taken your place, we guarantee you’ll adore the gilded splendour, the handmade Maison Lelievre tablecloth, the Imperial Crown porcelain, and the bee theme that pervades the room and hints at Prince Bonaparte’s passion for botany.
But you may also like to reflect on the fact that the Prince’s uncle, the great Napoleon Bonaparte himself, probably would have hated the food even if he’d felt at home in the finery. He liked his grub plain, simple lentil or potato soup, roast beef with green beans, and water to drink, and he had quite a habit of wiping his plate clean with bread…
