There’s still time to grab your piece of European sun this summer… even if you haven’t had a moment to think about it or, arranged anything yet. These are our picks of splendid destinations with all the fun and relaxation you need but which – crucially – still have space for those busy latecomers.
Conrad Algarve, Portugal
If you’re looking for the heat and invigoration of classic Portugal, with all the no-brainer luxury you can cope with, then the Conrad Algarve ticks every box in a heartbeat. This extensive resort is at Quinta do Lago right on the Atlantic coastline, and close by the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Park. That said, you and your family may not want to wander that far because there’s a choice of wonderful pools on-site outside and in, an extensive spa, and a driving range plus a dedicated golf concierge to plan your play. Heinz Beck’s Gusto is a Michelin-starred marvel right in the hotel alongside a host of other eateries and bars, or you can dine in your room, suite or the Infinity Penthouse.
7Pines Resort Ibiza
You can’t go wrong with Ibiza, especially the gorgeous 7Pines Resort. Nestled in a pine grove on the island’s west side, the classic whitewashed suites are clustered in amazing garden villages. And they all have a wonderful view of the Med where the sunsets are truly epic, especially with a tapas feast to enjoy. For a family holiday, the Kio House Of Kids is all about nature and sustainability and will keep them happy and wide-eyed while you simply relax or tone up in the superbly-equipped gyms. 7Pines has its own fleet of Pershing yachts for charter – a sensational way to explore the Balearics in laid-back style.
Verdura Resort, Sicily
Rocco Forte Hotels’ Sicilian hideaway will introduce you to something distinctively different in Italy – it’s a beautiful, contemporary resort where the redesigned accommodation is topped by the amazing Forte suites and private villas, complete with their own individual pools. We suggest that if you yearn to delight your tastebuds while on holiday then this is the place, with cooking classes, Sicilian food nights, the Cassetta Nell’Orto kitchen garden overflowing with local produce, the Crudo Bar, and even an outpost of Chelsea’s Japanese restaurant Dinings SW3. Plus, Verduland has been voted Europe’s best kids’ club by The Times for 2023.
One&Only Portonovi, Montenegro
Montenegro’s flourishing new riviera; now there’s a claim! But it won’t take you long to realise that the south-east European country is a hidden gem, jam-packed with breathtaking beauty, an individual culture and heritage, and an undiscovered sense of adventure. The suites and villas at One&Only Portonovi make a wonderful base from which to discover this part of the Adriatic coast, situated at the entrance of Boka Bay. Here is a particular journey of discovery for wine connoisseurs, because there are countless small, local producers whose vineyards are overflowing with new vintages, ready to sample. And if you never touch a drop then we think you’ll love the hiking, watersports and pristine beaches at your disposal.
Nana Princess Hotel, Crete
This delightful resort was opened in 2018 and offers a truly five-star luxury experience with its 102 villas and suites, married to the kind of warm welcome for which Crete is renowned. It’s set on its own, magnificent seafront but is totally private, and that includes the saltwater pools, steam rooms and gyms. But the Nana Water Park right next door also provides endless thrills and spills for the whole family, and your children and their new friends will love to splash around there all day…
