A Holiday Paired With Wine in South Africa

A blend of diverse terrains paired with a distinctly cool Mediterranean-like climate makes the wines of South Africa’s Cape some of the country’s most intriguing. Here, we introduce you to our favourite wine escapes, threading together three distinct expressions of South African wine: coastal elegance in Cape Town and Constantia, verdant Winelands charm in Franschhoek and an opportunity to marry a luxury safari experience to your love of wine in a safari lodge with a world-class wine cellar.

Whether you’re swirling a crisp white in the oldest wine region in the Southern Hemisphere, watching Franschhoek’s vineyards glow at sunset, or tasting a rare vintage as elephants cross a riverbed, we’ll craft a South African wine itinerary entirely around your palate, with private visits to historic vintners and vineyards, and, if you prefer, a multi-stop luxury tour of some of South Africa’s most fascinating wine regions.

Ellerman House, Cape Town & Constantia

If you’re in Cape Town for the wine, then inevitably, one of your stops will be Constantia Valley, the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest wine-making region, just fifteen minutes from Cape Town’s centre. This serene escape, framed by verdant slopes stitched with vines heavy with sauvignon, feels a world away from the bustle of Cape Town. Here, you’ll spend days sampling incredible wines in leafy estates like Groot Constantia and Buitenverwachting, tracing centuries of viticulture and walking scenic trails winding alongside rivers and past centuries-old Dutch homesteads.

You’ll stay in Cape Town’s marvellous Ellerman House, an Atlantic sanctuary of wine, elevated cuisine and art. The hotel and its attractive al fresco terraces overlook Bantry Bay, the sensuous curve of jagged hills and turquoise sea, at the foot of the flat-topped Table Mountain. Ellerman House hotel has a contemporary collection of 11 rooms, two suites and two villas. Villa One is the ideal choice for large families with its 5 en suite rooms, a superb infinity pool hovering above the ocean, and a fully equipped kitchen managed by a private chef.

Wander the ornate public areas of Ellerman House, and you’ll find so much art: paintings and sculptures, from two centuries’ worth of South African artists, but go looking for wine and you’ll find an even stronger collection: a 7,500-bottle wine cellar, a celebration of the country’s remarkable terroir, accompanied by two distinct culinary concepts that pair the wines with perfectly complementary fusion cuisine. Of the two restaurants, the recently launched CURATE at Ellerman House offers a sublime setting for romantic dinners amongst the bottles, which are stored in a towering spiral wine rack centrepiece.

La Residence, Franschhoek & The Winelands

East from Cape Town, idyllic Franschhoek sits in the heart of the Cape Winelands, a storied valley of centuries-old vineyards, orchards and sandstone peaks punctuated by charming Cape Dutch architecture and artisanal wineries. Days here are a beguiling mix of undisturbed natural beauty paired with nature’s bounty distilled: plump grapes plucked, crushed, fermented, aged and swirled around a wine glass, sipped as an accompaniment to breathtaking sunsets. A relaxed way to see Franschhoek’s vineyards is aboard the delightful Wine Tram, departing from Franschhoek Village and zipping between local vineyards, allowing for a hop-on, hop-off exploration fuelled by wine. Of course, if you’d prefer something a little more refined, ask your Travel Designer to suggest a few ideas. A road trip from Cape Town to Franschhoek in a V8-powered Cobra, perhaps?

Your base in Franschhoek is the magnificent La Residence, set amongst Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vineyards, rose gardens and fruit orchards. The hotel’s lavish interiors are finished in a striking, unrestrained maximalist style, with bold colours, chandeliers, antiques and a gallery’s worth of artworks, while an eye-catching exterior is framed by dramatic mountain ridges and roamed by peacocks, lending the property an air of fantasy and seclusion.

A handful of individually styled rooms and residences at La Residence offer everything from elegant suites with mountain views direct from the tub, lofts with roll-top baths and farmhouse ceilings, to suites in the vineyard with private plunge pools. The best of them, though, is the exquisite country-house like Franschhoek House, an exclusive-use villa with six bedrooms, a heated chequerboard swimming pool, and rooms painted in vibrant jewel colours, finished with contemporary art and chic furnishings. The estate’s culinary philosophy is a celebration of the region (and utilises a similarly striking, colour ethos as the hotel): seasonal dishes crafted from ingredients plucked from the gardens, paired with an eclectic and expertly curated menu of Franschhoek wines.

Travel tip: Ask your Travel Designer about a room during September’s Franschhoek Uncorked Festival, to see the little village burst to life in celebration of the region’s wine.
