Riviera Season: Where to Stay on the Côte d’Azur

Sun-kissed days watching the Mediterranean meet the sand from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to Saint-Tropez, atmospheric explorations of old Nice’s Italianate alleys, and exquisite lunches overlooking one of the world’s most extravagant sporting events, the French Riviera remains one of Europe’s great summer playgrounds.

To experience the Côte d’Azur at its most dazzling, we’ve curated a collection of the Riviera hotels we think best define the region: from legendary Belle Époque grand dames in Monte-Carlo and iconic beach clubs in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to clifftop retreats suspended beautifully above the Mediterranean.

Monaco Grand Prix & Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Each year, the legendary Grand Prix makes its glamorous return to Monaco. Marinas fill with superyachts, champagne-spiked terraces overlook the track, and the roar of F1 engines echoes through Belle Époque streets. And at the centre of it all sits Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, with its palace-like façade, three Michelin-starred Le Louis XV restaurant and breathtaking interiors recognisable as the backdrop for myriad films and iconic Helmut Newton photoshoots.

During Grand Prix, the hotel hosts race-view terraces with exclusive culinary experiences, and inside, marble hallways, a magnificent glass rotunda and a crystal chandelier preserve the grandeur of Monaco’s golden age.

The Diamond Suite Garnier at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

For Grand Prix stays, we suggest the exceptional Diamond Suite Garnier. Its expansive terrace overlooks Place de Casino, offering a remarkable vantage point from which to watch drivers navigate one of the circuit’s more technically demanding sections. And inside, the decor balances Riviera style with contemporary comfort across two bedrooms, making it ideal for small groups.

Riviera Summers at Monte-Carlo Beach

Wake early for a swim in the Mediterranean from the hotel’s private beach, eat long seafood lunches beneath striped awnings and spend afternoons journeying between quaint Provençal towns filled with pastel houses, citrus trees and cobbled café terraces. Set at the border of Monaco, though technically Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Monte-Carlo Beach captures a distinctly vivid Riviera style, balancing beach-club culture with the elegance of Monaco.

Amenities and Suites at Monte-Carlo Beach

The private beach is one of the Côte d’Azur’s most iconic, its sensuous curve framed by rows of chic striped cabanas and the hotel’s 1920’s peach-coloured façade beyond. Above it sits the legendary Olympic-sized seawater pool, home to the Monte-Carlo Beach Club, originally opened in 1929, and long considered an institution on the Riviera. There are three restaurants at Monte-Carlo Beach, but the signature restaurant, Michelin-starred Elsa Marcel Ravin, is truly special, elevating distinctive Riviera produce into refined Mediterranean cuisine.

The Monte-Carlo Beach spa — set within a villa cocooned by pines — remains an icon in its own right, offering facials and massages as well as open-air yoga. But if you are looking for more, guests of all Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer hotels receive complimentary access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo.

Serenity Above the Côte d’Azur at The Maybourne Riviera

Above the rocky coast of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the Riviera becomes more dramatic and a touch rugged as the coastline curves eastwards. Roads cling tightly to cliff faces — ideal for driving the winding corniche between Monaco, Menton and Èze, whilst below, the Mediterranean shifts between deep cobalt and shimmering azure. Rising from the rocks above, The Maybourne Riviera feels uniquely connected to the scenery, eschewing the trappings of a traditional Riviera hotel and offering instead a minimalist design that appears to grow from the cliffs.

Architecture, Dining & Suites at The Maybourne Riviera

Designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, The Maybourne Riviera’s contemporary aesthetic — all stone and glass — keeps the Mediterranean in constant view, whether from the infinity pool looking over the sea or the terrace at Riviera Restaurant, where menus draw from the distinctive ingredients of the surrounding terroir.

That same minimalist design language translates to the rooms, which are expansive and connected to the sea via clear glass terraces. But for travellers seeking a restorative holiday, 360’s travel designers suggest the Surrenne Suite. The suite is finished with calming natural materials and has priority access to the Surrenne Riviera Spa. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sublime Mediterranean views, and there’s a furnished terrace and thermal pool suspended above the water.

An Icon Reimagined at COMO Le Beauvallon

After spending almost two decades as an events venue, this historic hotel, once known as Le Golf Hôtel, is back as a new addition to the Riviera, revived by COMO Hotels. The property sits between verdant Provençal hillsides and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, granting equally effortless access to pine-shaded roads winding through quiet hillside villages and beaches like Plage de Pampelonne. But the history itself is a real draw. Peek into the palace’s past and you meet a history of creatives, dignitaries and stars like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Churchill, and Géraldy.

The Experience at COMO Le Beauvallon

Arrive by boat from Port de Saint-Tropez or anchor in the hotel’s private pontoon if you’re travelling by yacht. From there, the large sun-singed terracotta of the hotel’s façade is swept up in the greenery of the lawns rolling towards the sea, briefly punctuated by a uniform parade of striped parasols set beside the pool.

Rooms and suites are presented in muted natural tones, allowing the Riviera palette of glowing blues and pine greens to pop through the long floor-to-ceiling windows. There are several impressive speciality suites offering space and privacy for families, but if you need a one-bedroom, we suggest the Beauvallon Suite with its room-width window and a generous balcony framing breathtaking seaviews.

At The Waters Edge at Hôtel Les Roches

Set directly above the water in Le Lavandou, Hôtel Les Roches occupies one of the Riviera’s most spectacular seaside settings. Here, the coastline feels a little more rustic and elemental: pine-covered hillsides falling into clear water, rocky coves and uninterrupted views towards the Îles d’Or. Indeed, the hotel’s raw stone façade sits so close to the sea that it appears almost anchored to the seabed.

Riviera Living at Hôtel Les Roches

Originally opened in the 1930s, Hôtel Les Roches has been fabulously reimagined for a new era of luxury travel whilst preserving the building’s connection to the coast. L’Oursin restaurant is central to the experience, its refined sea-fresh cuisine recently earning a Michelin star, while the rooftop La Langouste sur le Toit serves flame-cooked Mediterranean feasts against the picturesque backdrop of the Îles du Levant.

Interiors balance contemporary elegance with Côte d’Azur style, allowing the sea to remain a constant throughout the hotel. Rooms and suites are impeccably turned out in white with playful, colourful accents that recall the surrounding nature. Of them, the Sea View Suites are a favourite, with large terraces and uninterrupted views, and the aesthetics of a private residence enviably set at the water’s edge.

The Timeless Allure of Old Nice & Hôtel du Couvent

Walk the winding alleyways of Vieux Nice, and you’ll find the coast’s imposing façades and glitzy beach clubs fade into antique shutters, washing lines suspended over iron balconies and hidden squares perfumed with Provençal herbs — all in an enchanting Italianate style. It’s here, tucked behind stone walls, that Hôtel du Couvent resides, in a beautifully restored 17th-century convent. Enter the courtyard and the noise of the city dissolves, replaced by cool cloisters and terraced gardens.

Gardens, Roman Baths & Suites at Hôtel du Couvent

Hôtel du Couvent’s gardens are among its greatest features, filled with trees, herbs and quiet corners to lose yourself in a book or a glass of wine. Elsewhere, the restaurant flows onto private courtyards, a rooftop pool overlooks the city, and beneath the stone, a Roman bath circuit occupies a former crypt, reimagined for contemporary wellness rituals. Interiors throughout embrace natural materials, antique objects and a monastic simplicity, allowing the architecture to lead.

There are some truly sublime rooms at Hôtel du Couvent, from the small but excellently appointed Clarisses, Colettines and Capucines to the larger Suites de Couvent. But for something a little more special, we recommend two favourites: Le Jardin Marguerite, set within its own private garden, and La Très Grande Suite, with views across the rooftops of old Nice.
