Sri Lanka Through a Different Lens

Smaller in size than Ireland, Sri Lanka is anything but limited in what it offers the modern traveller, with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 26 national parks home to leopard and elephant, and some of the Indian Ocean’s finest within its modest footprint. Combine this with 2,500 years of history and a rich diversity of faiths seen in everything from food to architecture, it’s easy to see why this island nation is topping the must-visit lists.

Where else can you wake amongst verdant tea fields in the highlands, lunch beside a 2,000-year-old dagoba (religious monument), and be on the beach by sunset? For honeymooners, it is a place where days disappear into each other without effort and memories are made of wildlife sightings, sunrise hikes, and unwinding on golden sands. For families and extended families travelling together, the distances between highlights are short, the people are warm, and there is something to hold everyone’s attention, from exploring Galle Fort with a third-generation resident to cooking classes in a village kitchen or playing the locals in a round of cricket.

But Sri Lanka’s real beauty reveals itself when you go beyond the well-known circuit. That is where our partners on the ground, The Fabulous Getaway, come in.

Real people, real connections

The Fabulous Getaway works with over 100 local communities across Sri Lanka. These are not prescribed tours that you’ll find in a guidebook. They are long-standing relationships, built over years, with real people who open their doors, share their knowledge, and offer true connections you simply cannot find any other way.

Here are two experiences we think cannot be missed for 360 Private travellers:

Pekoe Trail with Pavithra

The Pekoe Trail is a 323 km hiking trail that winds through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, through working tea estates, past pluckers with baskets on their backs, and along ridgelines where the mist rolls in by mid-afternoon. Walk a section of the trail with Pavithra, a local guide whose family has been part of tea country life for generations. Her father was a tea planter, as was his father before him. She was one of the first female guides on the trail and truly invites you into her world.

Pavithra will share the rituals of the tea planters, the hierarchy of an estate community, and how the role of women has evolved from caring for family to a more empowered way of life. Expect to learn things no guidebook will tell you, and come away with a far richer understanding of what this landscape actually means to the people who live in it.

Dinner with elephant conservationists

Elephants are one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved animals, but the reality of living alongside them is complicated. Growing human populations put pressure on habitats, and elephants sometimes roam beyond the boundaries of national parks, raiding farms in search of food. A community of conservationists has spent 30 years working to find solutions, from educational programmes to practical farming changes, to creating safe shelters along pathways shared by both villagers and elephants.

Over a private dinner in the Cultural Triangle, your host is one of these conservationists, someone with decades of experience in the field. The conversation is candid, personal, and eye-opening. You will hear stories about the challenges both the elephants and the communities face, and the dedication it takes to keep a fragile balance intact. Funds from this dinner go directly to supporting the conservation work.

Delve deeper with our guides

A good guide changes a holiday, but a great one transforms how you see a country. The Fabulous Getaway’s guides are some of the very best in Sri Lanka, and it shows in the way travellers talk about them long after they get home. They know the history, the back roads, the right place to stop for a cup of tea. More than that, they care. They want you to understand the nuances of the island, the differences between Tamil hill country and Sinhalese lowlands, between a Buddhist temple and a Hindu kovil, and which hidden street in Colombo to find the very best street food or where to drink tea shoulder to shoulder with the locals. For them, this is not a job. It is a way of life they have chosen because they love it. They are fun, they read the room well, and they have a habit of making people fall in love with Sri Lanka – so don’t be surprised if you find yourself planning a return visit in years to come!

Unforgettable hotel stays

Beyond the well-known names, Sri Lanka has a growing collection of smaller, design-led properties that deserve attention for their sense of place, their service, and the consistency of guest feedback. Here are three to tempt you with:

Uga Ghiri, Ella (opening mid-2026)

Fifteen exquisite standalone villas on a 10-acre terraced hillside, built on the historic Sutherland Estate in tea country. The restored colonial manor serves as the main house. From the property, you can watch the daily trains crossing the Nine Arch Bridge, framed by jungle and tea fields. This will be the first property of its calibre in Ella.

Thotalagala, Haputale

A seven-suite planter’s bungalow dating back to the 1870s, set on the Dambatenne estate that Sir Thomas Lipton himself planted. The infinity pool looks out over patana grass towards the southern coast. The chef will cook whatever you ask for, and the staff put a hot water bottle in your bed each night. It is the kind of place where your needs are anticipated before they have even formed as thoughts in your mind.

Malabar Hill, Weligama

Fourteen villas on a former cinnamon plantation above Weligama Bay, designed with Moorish and Rajasthani influences rather than the Geoffrey Bawa aesthetic that dominates most Sri Lankan hotels. Each villa has floor-to-ceiling glass, a private saltwater pool, and views from jungle canopy to the Indian Ocean.

VIP treatment across the island

The Fabulous Getaway has long-standing relationships with many hotels across Sri Lanka. Because of those relationships, your preferences are known down to the finest detail before you even arrive. The service is warmer, more attentive, and more personalised than a standard booking can deliver.

On top of that, at most properties you receive complimentary perks along the way. You might find a bottle of wine waiting in your room on arrival. A candlelit dinner set up by the pool or on the beach. A private cooking demonstration with the head chef. A guided birdwatching walk at dawn, or a massage you did not have to book. At some properties, it is handmade chocolates at turndown. At others, evening cocktails by a fire pit, or tea served beside a river as the light fades.

A warm welcome awaits

Feeling inspired? Our team on the ground in Sri Lanka would love to welcome you and share the magic of their island home.
