Luxury Solo Travel: 6 Trips Designed for One

Sometimes you need to escape, step away from everyday life and choose your own adventures. Luxury solo travel makes this possible, allowing you to discover the world and yourself on your terms and at your own pace, with complete control of your itinerary.

Here we present six distinct journeys, designed for solo travellers who value independence without compromise: from monastic moments in an atmospheric retreat in the Umbrian hills and incomparable Gorilla safaris to (single-supplement-free) luxury cruises. Consider these starting points, each adaptable to make your trip entirely yours.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Rwanda

Indulging your independence (and meeting gorillas)

There are few experiences as naturally suited to solo travel as a gorilla safari. At Singita Kwitonda Lodge, on the edge of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, mornings begin in silence as mist rolls across the hills, while afternoons can include hikes to nearby communities or conversations about conservation efforts on the ground. But the highlight is always venturing deep into the forests for one of the world’s most profound wildlife encounters: making contact with mountain gorillas in the heart of their breathtaking natural habitat.

Kwitonda Lodge itself is extraordinary, constructed from volcanic stone and designed to dissolve into its surroundings. Suites are expansive, acting as spaces where you can retreat and luxuriate after days exploring in the wild. The atmosphere is wildly romantic, recalling the days of boundary-defining solo explorers, with crackling fires, panoramic views of the Virunga volcanoes, and thoughtful, intuitive service. What truly sets a Singita solo stay apart, however, is the level of personalisation available. Private guiding allows you to shape each day around your interests: whether that means spending time learning about conservation or longer treks and cultural experiences, this is a journey ideal for solo travellers who yearn for singular travel experiences.

Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives

A Sensory Escape

If a solo safari is about distraction-free wildlife, solo escapes at Gili Lankanfushi’s sublime Maldivian resort are about restorative and deeply meditative pleasure. Set on a private island, this is barefoot luxury at its most stunning. Indeed, we’ve previously ranked Gili Lankanfushi as one of our favourite romantic escapes, due to its privacy and sheer spectacle of location, but all of this works just as well for solo travellers. Accommodation at Gili Lankanfushi amplifies autonomy with luxurious villas, placing you above luminous azures, entirely private yet connected to the island by wooden walkways. Interiors favour natural materials, open-air living, and immersive decks to dip into the water when you please.

Gili Lankanfushi’s Solo Experience is designed to take full advantage of amenities while providing a backdrop for reflection and restoration. Days wind between your villa, lagoon swims, spa rituals at Meera Spa, and sea-fresh seafood eaten amongst the conviviality of the open-air restaurants or in the privacy of your villa. Included experiences feature a “Dine in the Dark” dinner, designed to heighten taste, scent and texture, as well as two hours of spa treatments, beach yoga sessions, a solo photography session, and sunset sailing on a traditional Dhoni sailboat.

Santani Wellness Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka

Inner Fulfilment in an unspoilt wilderness

Santani’s wellness approach is relaxed and based on the premise that no two people are the same, with health programmes tuned to the needs of the individual, via a comprehensive consultation, which shapes a bespoke programme that may include Ayurveda, detoxification, stress management, meditation, and nutrition. It’s a retreat designed for travellers who want structure without rigidity, and transformation without the need for ideologies. Accommodations are pared back to essentials, encouraging focus, rest, and reflection, allowing for days that balance treatments, exploration, and silence, with enough guidance to feel supported when you need it. Health journeys here focus on everything from stress management and anti-ageing to meditation and yoga programmes, and there are hydrotherapy pools, saunas, and steam rooms.

The setting is sublime, perched high amongst rolling hills, just outside Kandy: the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. Architecture is kept deliberately minimalist: glass and private infinity pools (take the Mountain View villa) perched on the edge of the tree line, all elevated above an impressive jungle canopy, opening onto uninterrupted valley panoramas. Explorers have 116 acres of jungle and rice fields for hiking and meditation, while the Hulu River provides a picturesque venue for wild swimming.

Eremito, Italy

A Study in Solitude

Eremito has the look and feel of an ancient hermitage, evoking a medieval monastic atmosphere, designed for travellers who seek deliberate simplicity: light filtering through stone-framed windows and the sound of nature beyond the walls. There are no televisions, minibars or engineered distractions. Instead, Eremito offers a rigorously edited environment, all stone corridors, candlelit interiors, and impressive hand-built stone architecture. Minimalist rooms inspired by monastic quarters have bedding made of hemp yarn, along with a private bathroom and a stone desk set by a window to frame inspirational countryside views. The interiors are austere certainly, yet beautiful, offering only what is needed for rest, silence and reflection.

Activities are led by nature and a human touch: walking trails wind through forests and fields, there are painting classes to flex your creativity, and Gregorian chanting to foster a meditative state. The relaxation area was dug out from the local rock and has a whirlpool tub and a steam bath. Meals are served in the Refectory around long wooden feasting tables and a stone fireplace, perfect on long, winter nights, and the food is vegetarian, showcasing ingredients grown on the estate and sourced from the local area.

The BodyHoliday, St Lucia

Structured and Social

BodyHoliday is set between a crescent of Caribbean beach and an undulation of lush hills, on St Lucia’s palm-fringed Gros Islet. The resort hosts daily classes and treatments incorporating a comprehensive fitness menu of more than 30 classes, with sunrise yoga, pilates and archery, as well as Ayurvedic treatments, thalassotherapy and infrared saunas. But don’t think of BodyHoliday as a strict calorie-restricted bootcamp (though it’s possible if that’s what you want), rather a more customisable health-forward retreat, where the mood remains flexible and judgment-free.

360’s Travel Designers recommend visiting in September for the “September Solos” month, with a programme specifically designed for guests travelling alone. The trips include a daily spa treatment, access to the extensive fitness classes, a sunset cruise, cooking classes, hand-picked excursions, and the freedom to design your days as actively or relaxingly as you wish. Repeat guests often cite beachside yoga classes and guided hikes as ideal diversions for light morning exertion, followed by a therapeutic massage, or view-laden lunches overlooking the sea in the afternoon. Evening dinners unfold across multiple restaurants, each with a convivial atmosphere that encourages conversation, with everything from custom and Ayurvedic diets to indulgent guilty pleasures catered to.

Explora Journeys, The High Seas

At Sea with the Solivagant Society

Solo sea travel has traditionally come with compromises: supplements and awkward social events that can feel a bit forced. But with Solivagant Society, Explora Journeys acknowledges that some travellers choose to journey solo, not out of necessity but preference, with the possibility of connection on their own terms. And perhaps best of all, single supplements on select Explora Journeys cruises begin at 0%.

On board, this exceptional cruising experience is shaped by options over obligation. The solo-taveller-focused Solivagant Society meet-ups are often around aperitivo hour, afternoon tea, or hosted dining, and are structured to create natural points of connection without obligation. All travellers are welcome across the destination experiences, from cultural explorations ashore to immersive city encounters — whether you’re embarking on an expedition to Alaska and its rich wildlife or a cruise of the Mediterranean’s most historic ports. Additional experiences, such as the Luminaries enrichment programme, offer talks, workshops, and conversations designed to stimulate curiosity, with speakers available for informal coffee or lunch, should you like to learn a little more.
